It was during 1945, even before the end of the Second World War, that a group of keen sailors with a passion for sailing founded Muggia Sailing Club. In its long history it has produced numerous champions who have made Muggia, Trieste and Italy proud of their distinguished sporting achievements in all types of regattas. The roll of honour is full of champions’ names, too many to count. Among them worthy of particular mention is Vasco Vascotto, Italian, European and World Champion, who always remains faithful to CDVM where his sporting talent was born. He has world recognition. His last challenge with Luna Rossa was legendary and his vast experience contributed to optimum results against the New Zealand team in the America’s Cup. The sailing club is an amateur, nonprofit sporting association based in Muggia. Since its foundation it has always been nonpolitical, non-discriminatory and democratic, offering the same rights to all its members. The club has been awarded silver and gold medals for sporting merit by CONI.
Other than racing yachts, the club’s main activity involves young people and the promotion of the sport and love of the sea. Courses are organized for children from 6 to 14 years who can learn and enjoy the rudiments of sailing in the beautiful setting of our club, where they are closely followed by worthy, young instructors. At the moment the competitive team is comprised of about 20 athletes in Optimist (basic boat for learning sailing and navigation) and 15 in Laser. Qualified, patient instructors follow the young athletes throughout their training and during regattas. The club is also engaged in social events. Every year our members organize a two day event inviting disabled guests on board to feel the excitement and pleasure of sailing.
The club promotes and holds regattas for dinghies and racing yachts. One of the most important is the Muggia – Portorose – Muggia which has taken place for over 40 years along our wonderful coast. This is a symbolic event of the tradition of our racing yachts of the North Adriatic coast which has its roots in the dialogue and collaboration between Italy and Slovenia. It represents a real tradition for all our sailors which includes competition, fun and celebration on the sea. Over the years the club has organized events of national interest which has attracted young sailors accompanied by their parents; together they have been able to appreciate the wonderful area.
